Hi all! Here's the sorta-short first part of Chapter 1! Sorry it's a bit late...

Chapter 1: Acceptance

Daisuke awoke to find Koichiro cooking a puny looking rabbit over a fire. His stomach grumbled and he climbed down. He glanced around for a second, then asked, "Where's Ayame?"
"Still sleeping," Koichiro replied without looking at him.
Daisuke sighed, then sat down beside the fire. From the smell, he could tell it was from dead wood. He'd been hunting and tracking in these woods for as long as he could remember. Now they blanketed him in calmness.
Koichiro turned the rabbit and commanded, "Go get us some mushrooms and herbs for this."
Daisuke was happy to oblige. He tramped off into the woods towards a fungus-covered tree he remembered. It had several kinds of edible mushrooms, many good-tasting. He found the tree and removed a few juicy fungi. He turned and started back. Just a few steps into the forest, his ears caught the faintest of footsteps. He whipped around just in time to see a fist connecting with his head.

Daisuke slowly came to. He was tied by his wrists to a stump. A man with a green cloak was staring at him intently. Daisuke stared right back at him. No one spoke for a while.
Finally, Daisuke asked, "What do you want?"
The man stood and replied with another question, "Would you like to die?"
Daisuke was taken aback. "No, of course not!" he replied. "How could you ask me that?"
The man looked down at him. "Why?"
Daisuke looked questioningly at him. "Why what?"
"Why don't you want to die?"
"Well, I don't know! I just don't!"
"Think about it."
Daisuke thought hard. "Because I haven't done anything important. I haven't helped the world at all."
The man smiled. "Exactly. I can help you to accomplish great things with your life." At a click of his fingers, the binding on Daisuke disappeared. Daisuke flexed his hands a bit and rubbed his wrists to get rid of the pain. He stood, finding that the man was only slightly taller than he was.
Daisuke then spoke, "If you're going to teach me anything, I'll have to know your name, at least."
The man held out his hand. "Of course. I'm Miyamoto Miyako."
Daisuke shook it and replied, "I'm Kitara Daisuke." As he said this, he suddenly remembered his siblings. "Where are they?! Where are Koichiro and Ayame?"
Miyako turned to him. "I did not see any others. You may not go to them," he said as Daisuke started to walk out, "You still need to be trained, or you'll attract more danger for them."
Frustrated, Daisuke sat back down. "What do I have to do before I can go find them?"
His instructor replied, "You have to learn to control your spirit aura. It will lure the wrong sorts of people to you. To do that you'll have to be accepted by the spirits here."
Daisuke slowly nodded. "What do I have to do?"
Miyako turned towards a doorway. "Follow me."
The two walked in silence down a long hallway. Every so often, he turned down side paths, and soon even Daisuke, the tracker that he was, got confused. He would not be able to find his way back. Finally they turned into a dark room. Dim yellow lights poured eerie glows down from above. In the center was a thick, smooth pole from floor to ceiling. Another set of lights shone down its sides.
"Can you see them, the spirits' fangs?"
"No," replied Daisuke.
"Then open your eyes and look." He passed his hand over Daisuke's eyes. For a moment, his head tingled, and he saw only a green glow. Then the room returned to his sight outlined in that same glow. The smooth pole was now decorated with dozens of sets of fangs. They pointed downward, away from the light. Daisuke backed up a step, but was stopped from going farther by a powerful force. Miyako stepped foreward and passed his right arm by the pole. Daisuke noticed it was a claw. Nothing happened. "Now see what they do when my plain arm passes in front of them." The fangs started to move towards his outstretched arm. Transparent forms flowed behind them. Before they could reach it, he blocked their path with his right arm. They stopped for a moment, then turned and sunk back into pole.
Miyako then turned and beakoned for Daisuke to approach. He tentatively stepped closer. His teacher spoke, "These are they spirits who will accept you, if you ware worthy. If you are not..." He held up a large cut of beef and threw it towards the pole. In a few seconds, it was gone. A small pool of blood layed below it.
His teacher then turned back to him. "Touch the pole."
Daisuke's eyes widened. "If I do, they'll kill me!"
Miyako glared at him. "I already told! If you want your life to mean something good, you need to control your spirit aura! If you don't, I'll have to you so that you're not a threat to the world. Either way, if you fail, you die. You've nothing to lose. Touch the pole!"
Daisuke took a deep breath. "Which hand should I use?"
Miyako calmed down and replied, "Your main one."
Daisuke nodded. With a rapid heartbeat, he stretched out his right hand and touched the pole. In an instant, the spirits were upon him. They swirled around his outstretched arm and bit. He clenched his teeth and was tempted to move his hand away until Miyako yelled out, "Don't move your hand!" After every spirit had bitten him, they detatched and flowed back into the pole.
"You may pull back you hand now."
Daisuke carefully brought his heavilly bleeding arm towards him. He hardly noticed when Miyako came and put his hand on his shoulder. "Good job! You've passed the first stage of acceptance!"
Daisuke turned to him with a stunned face and practactly yelled, "First stage?! You mean there's more? How many stages are there!?"
"Three," Miyako replied, "the first tests willpower, the second tests power, and the third tests element."
Daisuke stared at him awkwardly. "What do you mean 'element?'"
He slapped his hand to his head. "Elements! Your personality elements! Ugh! Anyway, the last two steps are in a week. Until then, you will wear this metal cast on your arm to ensure that you're fit enough when the time comes."
Daisuke's mouth hung open. "I don't even get stitches for this?! Are you nuts?!"
Miyako sighed. "You don't need stitches, baka. Besides, you need scars for the next steps."
Daisuke cringed and followed his teacher into another circular room, this one glowing silver in the light. Miyako led him to table that had a huge sheet of metal on it. He picked it up and bent it around Daisuke's arm with eaze. It stung, but Daisuke beared with it. Miyako sliced off the excess metal with his bare hand in flash of gold. When Daisuke stared at him in awe, he calmly explained, "It's part of being accepted." He then molded it around his arm so that it wouldn't be in the way.
Miyako brought him to a small room. It was largely undecorated with only a picture of a stone claw hanging on the wall. "The first battle claw," remarked Miyako. "You'll sleep here until you've completed the first part of your training. You might as well get some rest now. Tomorrow I'll start teaching you how to respect the spirits." He left Daisuke alone.
Daiuske looked around a bit, then collapsed onto the bed, then only piece of furniture in the room. He hit his arm and bit back back a curse of pain. Finally settling himself so he wouldn't jostle his arm, he sunk into a deep sleep.
