In a world alternate to our own, history takes a turn for the worse. The North American country of the United States is split usunder with its many wars. Two seperate countries come out of the turmoil: The Union, and the Confederacy. The years went on, and the histories of the two worlds again ran parellel.
World War II
The Union sides with the Allies. The Confederacy sides with the Axis Powers. The Axis Powers gain control of much of Europe and other lands before the War comes to a standstill. When the War officially ends, Germany retains control of Mexico, the Carribean, and some of Russia. Japan takes the Pacific and much of Russia. The Confederacy takes the British Isles and some of South America. Austria and Hungary, who joined later in the war, were able to conquer the rest of the Adriatic Peninsula.
The Approach of a Third War
The newly conquered lands wish to revolt and win their independance again. Fighting starts all over the world with small, easily controlled uprisings, followed by stronger and more controlled attacks. This is where the story begins.

The sounds of machine guns rattled around the orphanage in Cuba, New Germany. The smaller children huddled together in fear. The older kids stood beside their caretakers, ready to take control if need be. A booted foot slammed against the door once, twice. The door flew inward, knocking one of the adults down. Through the new opening, the children could hear the screams of the dying.
The German soldiers entered, each carrying a fierce-looking rifle. Three soldiers entered and shot down the adults. They grabbed some of the younger boys by their arms and dragged them outside, yelling in German, "You will be our shields. They dare not attack their own young, their future."
Once they left, Hacio De Miro took charge. In a harsh whisper, he commanded, "All of you, get out of here! You saw what they were doing to the others. Run down to the docks and find a boat. You!" he pointed to one of the boys who knew how to sail, "Take the boat out and bring all of the kids to the other islands! There's a map in the grown-ups room!"
He watched them leave, then ran to the upper floors, where the youngest slept. He grabbed the two of them, both around 3 years old, and told them quietly, "Now, we're going to play a game. Run down to the harbor and hop on the boat with the older kids. They'll take you to a fun place. Got it?" The kids immediately settled down and nodded, smiles appearing on their faces. Either way, they'll be in a better place Hacio thought positively.
Now that everyone was gone, the orphanage where he'd lived for all of his childhood looked a lot solemner than usual. He took one long, last look around the place before running out to join the others.
